Gotta Have Faith

Looks like things aren’t going well for Romney. Yesterday McCain’s mother got the ball rolling again, addressing the issue of Romney’s faith. Today, New Hampshire voters wouldn’t leave it alone. Voters want to know how this would play into his decision making process. It’s a valid question.

Which brings me back to what I said the other day. He’s got a hill to climb, especially in the Bible Belt. I wasn’t far off. In September according to a Pew Research Center poll in September, a quarter of all Republicans – including 36 percent of white evangelical Protestants – said they would be less likely to vote for a Mormon.

Which brings us back to the question…Who do conservatives vote for? They’re not voting for Romney. Guiliani has too many issues with the biggest being pro-choice. And McCain stills leaves a bad taste in many Republican mouths.

Looks like were back to Mike Huckabee or Duncan Hunter. I know the so-called front runners have ruled Huckabee out, but it looks like he’s picking up steam in Iowa. Only time and votes will tell.

Principles Not Politics

Frankly, I’m tired of people telling me, “Vote for me, I’m the only one who can beat Hillary.” That’s a bunch of crap. Conservatives are not about compromising on principle. And that’s just what several of the front runners are asking us to do. Frankly, the candidates that are preaching this message are scared, because they are the most liberal candidates. Let’s not take the Republican party down the center or even left because we feel that’s the only way we can win.

That backfired on us in 2006 and will backfire on us again. The fact is that Americans like clear choices. The best thing we can do to beat Hillary is to run someone against her that stands for true conservative values. Someone that is pro-life. Someone diametrically different. Someone like Huckabee or Duncan Hunter. Not someone like Guiliani or Romney. Think about it.

If you’re just going to vote for someone on the criteria alone, that can beat Hillary, why not vote for Ron Paul? I’m sure he could sway a lot of votes from the Democrats, especially anti-war dems.

Who thought they would see the day that Pat Robertson, a Christian opposed to abortion, would back Guiliani just because he says he can beat Hillary?

What does this say about our country? The Christian Right, Moral Majority, or whatever you would like to call them, should be backing someone that fits their beliefs and prinicples, not someone totally the opposite.

Romney and Guiliani both think they’ve got this one in the bag on name recognition alone. But I believe when it comes down to it, the Bible Belt will vote for the one that they have the most in common with. And for me that is Huckabee.

Gore’s Inconvenient Truth

Global Warming and it’s fuzzy science has been the focus of many news reports this week, especially with Al Gore winning an Oscar for his Inconvenient Truth. But the fact of the matter remains is if liberals really believe this, then why aren’t they all living like the early pioneers who founded this country? Al Gore and the Hollywood left with all their millions have no qualms telling other people how to live but when it comes to changing their lifestyle that’s a different story. But Gore can’t run far from reports this week that he used 20x the average consumption of electricity. So much for carbon footprints.

However, some supporters are quick to point out that his investments in energy reduction balance out this agregous use of energy. I guess this is Gore’s Inconvenient Truth- he would rather sacrifice the well-being of the planet than give up his lavish lifestyle.

New Year…New Challenges

As we begin the new year we reliquish control of the House and Senate to the Democrats for the first time in 12 years. The path laid out before us is not easy.. but it is one that we must walk if we wish to regain control.

As a party we must return to our conservative roots. Running to the center in the previous election did not help our chances. In fact, it was the so-called “blue dog” democarats that ultimately won because they chose to run on a conservative principles like fiscal responsibility. Not to mention the fact that Republicans were fed up with their own party’s spending and allegations of corruption. As a result we decided to clean house.

Now we have an opportunity to show people who we really are by sticking to our conservative principles and by running true conservatives, not fiscally conservative moderates or democrats.

There is no doubt that the Presidential campaign will begin and end in Florida, especially with our own Mel Martinez as RNC Chair and Seminole County’s Jim Greer as RPOF Chair.

As young Florida Republicans we have a unique opportunity to not only vote for but also to have the ear of the next President of the United States.

There is no doubt that this year 2007 will bring new challenges. The question is are you ready?

New Years Resolutions

A new year has just begun. Let us take some time to reflect on the past year and think about the changes we need to make as a party as we look toward 2008.

There is no doubt about it the elections were dissapointing this year for Republicans. While we held our own in Seminole County – we lost the US House and Senate. Looking back there are several factors that contributed to this. I believe there are several things we can do as a party to bring success in 2008.

  1. Stick to conserative principles.
  2. Reduce spending.
  3. Weed out corruption.
  4. Field real conservatives, not moderates in conservative clothing.
  5. Do not expand the role of Government.

Sharing the Wealth

As we approach Thanksgiving, I came across an interesting article on Drudge about Giving. Philanthropy expert Arthur C. Brooks, who just authored the book:”Who Really Cares: The Surprising Truth About Compassionate Conservatism” revealed that “religious conservatives donate far more money than secular liberals to all sorts of charitable activities, irrespective of income.”

The main reason comes down ideological lines. Liberals who think Goverment can do more for people give less to charity even when government doesn’t provide enough money to the cause. Even going so far to say that big talkers don’t make big spenders unless it comes to someone else’s money.

So as we go this Holiday season remember this: Charity begins at home, not in Washington.

Everyone Should See This

united93
Earlier tonight, my husband and I went to see the movie United 93. I have to tell you I was not prepared for this movie. This movie grabs at your insides and tears them out. It is the most emotionally moving picture that I have seen since The Passion of the Christ. Not that I am comparing them in any way except that the way it made me feel when I left the theatre. And apparently I was not alone. Everyone in the theatre was silent as the credits went up. No one said a word as they walked out the door. But I saw a lot of red swollen eyes and large lumps in people’s throats.

While I do not want to give away too much of the movie- I will tell you that the director use of jarring camera angles and point of view shots put me and everyone else in the audience on that plane. It was very disturbing in a Hitchcockian kind of way. This movie is not for the faint of heart or children. But every able bodied American should see this film and thank God that we have soldiers willing to take our place and fight for the freedom of all Americans.

If anyone asks you “Why we are fighting this war ?” Tell them to go see United 93 then get back with you.

Overheard

I was in the lunch room the other day at school when I heard a student explaining his political views. First, he stated I am not a Republican or a Democrat. Immediately, I thought to myself- “Please don’t say you’re a moderate.” The next thing that came out of his mouth was shocking. He said, “I am a captialist.” He went on to explain how he was a strict captailist. Stating, “I am a captialist, but I am not conversative. I am a captialist, but not liberal.” He further explained his views on business and the economy- and how he felt that he was a man without a party. I was sad. Sad to hear that he didn’t think conseratives were pro-captialists.

But it is understandable when you see what has been going on in the Senate this week with “Big Oil”. Liberals made a push for the Windfall Profits Tax again- and many conservatives are ready to latch onto it. This is a dangerous idea. it almost reminds me of Marxism- punishing companies for doing well. Especially when there are many pro-capital solutions to the problem.

First of all, we haven’t had a new refinery in this country in over 35 years. And some of the ones that we do have are now shut down. A pro-capitalist would push for new refinining capabilities to increase oil production.

Second, a pro-capitalist would be for drilling in ANWAR and exploring other places for new sources of oil. Yet, liberals have stopped this exploration at every turn saying it causes environmental damage.

Third, a pro-capitalist would ease restrictions on special enviromentally friendly blends and lower taxes. Lower taxes? you ask. I heard this bit of trivia the other day. The gas companies make about 9¢ profit on each gallon of gasoline, while the government makes 50¢-65¢ on each gallon. Of course that is just the feds. That doesn’t include state, local and sales tax.

Now that is outrageous. Isn’t it about time that we do something about the windfall profits of the government?

Let’s take back our party and those people who consider themselves pro-capitalists.
