Crist: No to Rewarding Teachers

Today, Charlie Crist once again ignored the will of his party leaders in Florida, including his colleague, former Governor Jeb Bush, and voted with the Democrats and Teacher Unions by vetoing Senate Bill 6.

Crist’s motivations are unclear, especially considering he is losing support among the conservative base in his Senate Race. With this vote, he only confirms that he is a RINO- Republican in Name only. He is not someone that we want to send to Washington to vote on healthcare reform or cap and tax.

Immediately, after the veto, his own Attorney General, Bill McCollum put out this statement:

I am deeply disappointed Governor Crist succumbed to the pressure from Democrat Alex Sink and the unions by putting bureaucracy above the best interest of our children and teachers. The veto of Senate Bill 6 is a significant setback to our strides in education reform, which will limit Florida’s ability to compete on the world stage. We need to reward teachers and give them the tools to succeed, as was proposed in this legislation. As Governor, I will lead the charge to enact reforms that will ensure our children and teachers are positioned to be the very best they can be.

The final result of this move has not been seen yet, but several of Crist’s key supporters withdrew their support after his veto of Senate Bill 6.

Their has been speculation in recent days that Crist will pull out of the Republican Party and run as an independent in the upcoming General Election in November. So far, his campaign has not ruled it out as a possibility.

FL to Join Suit

Florida’s Attorney General Bill McCollum will join 37 other states and file a lawsuit against the Federal Government if ObamaCare passes.

The suit will target two key components of the bill, the healthcare mandate and the manipulation of the states. The mandate compels people to buy healthcare or incur a tax penalty. This essentially taxes people for just living. The manipulation of the states has to do with sovereignty and the 10th Amendment.

The Florida legislature is considering two bills this session.

Senator Carey Baker and Representative Scott Plakon filed the Healthcare Freedom Act which amends Florida’s Constitution “to prohibit any law or rule from forcing people into a one size fits all, federally mandated health care system such as that being rushed through Congress.”

In addition they are taking up a resolution reasserting Florida’s tenth amendment rights under the Constitution of the United States.

Ultimately, the Supreme Court may have to decide on the Constitutionality of the Health Care Bill.

SCYR’s Attend OCREC Dinner

I got a call the other day from Ariel, our new region chair about an opportunity to work for Tom Lee at the Orange County Republican Executive Committee Lincoln Day Dinner. At the time I thought this might be a good opportunity for me to get out and meet some more Movers and Shakers.

To my surprise I saw several of our YRs there as well. Michael Patterson, Adam LoveJoy, Heidi Watzak, Abby Birch, and our representative from Tom Feeney’s office. Several of them were there working for candidates as well. This is a great showing for our club.

There were also several other representatives from Seminole County. Sandy Adams, Jim and Virginia Baumford, Sandy and her girls, Mike Ertel, and several others.

Pretty much all the major candidates for office were there including Katherine Harris, Will McBride, Peter Monroe for Senate. Also spotted were Bill McCollum and Joe Negron for Attorney General. And of course Randy Johnson and Tom Lee for CFO.

The Marco Rubio, Speaker of the House of Florida was the keynote for the evening. I was very impressed with this Young Republican. He is truly an example we should all apire to.

Probably the best part of the evening for me was meeting Katherine Harris and eating Dinner with Tom Lee at Table 2. When I got home I kicked myself for not getting Katherine’s autograph. But I hope to see her on the campaign trail again in the near future. When the evening was over Tom thanked me for coming out to help and gave me a hug. Now that’s a candidate I’d vote for!
