Marco Rubio – Newsletter: April 8, 2011

Marco has been working hard all week on behalf of Floridians as the budget negotiations have continued. Even with control of the House, Senate and White House last year, Democrats still failed to pass a budget for this year. As a result, we find ourselves with no long-term budget more than halfway through Fiscal Year 2011. Making matters worse, this lack of leadership has us on a path toward a government shutdown. While Americans know that we must cut spending and begin to tackle our massive debt, many leaders in Washington have still not gotten the message. Marco will continue to make this his top priority to ensure that America’s next 100 years are better than her last 100 years.

A Stronger America…

With a belief that the world is a better place when America is leading, Marco continued to press Washington to take strong positions on Israel and Libya. This week, Marco led his fellow freshmen Republican Senators in sending a letter to Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell asking that America keep its commitments to its staunchest Middle East ally, Israel:

“As freshmen Senators, we campaigned on the need to restore fiscal responsibility to our government. The current path is fiscally unsustainable and will have negative consequences for economic growth and prosperity. As we work to reduce wasteful government spending, we recognize that providing for the national defense is a constitutional responsibility of the federal government. Therefore, we must continue to prioritize the safety of our nation and the security of our allies, including Israel.”

Marco also released a statement this week in support of the Colombia Free Trade Agreement. While the announcement of this agreement is welcome news, Marco notes that it is long overdue. The agreement is particularly good news for Florida with Marco stating that it “will be a boon to our economy, create jobs for Floridians, and help solidify our alliances with these steadfast partners. The agreements with Colombia and Panama in particular will boost Florida businesses, workers and farmers whose livelihoods rely on exports to these countries.”

Fighting For Florida…

This week, Marco voted to repeal one of the most burdensome regulations in the President’s health care law, known as the 1099 provision. This provision would have placed a new burden on businesses to comply with tax filing paperwork by forcing all businesses, charities, and state and local governments to file 1099 forms if they purchase $600 or more in goods and services from another business throughout the year. While repealing 1099 was critical, Marco believes we must repeal and replace the entire health care reform law and he is an original co-sponsor of legislation to do just that.

And in a separate effort to help Florida businesses, Marco voted to prevent the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) from implementing cap-and-trade regulations that would amount to a national energy tax. While this effort wasn’t successful in the Senate, Marco will continue to ensure that unelected bureaucrats in Washington aren’t able to implement regulations that will hurt job creation and raise energy prices for Floridians. Check out what Marco had to say about this week’s vote:

“The policies coming out of Washington are taking our country in the wrong direction, and the last thing Florida families and businesses need is unaccountable bureaucrats imposing an energy tax through regulation that will increase electricity and gasoline prices. … Cap-and-trade would not pass through Congress today and Obama administration should not be able to put one in place through rules drafted behind closed doors without the consent of the American people.”

Committed to Cutting Spending

As Congressional leaders work to hammer out a budget for 2011 and 2012, Marco and Rep. Tom Price (R-GA) introduced a bill to cut $45 billion in unused taxpayer dollars sitting in federal coffers. As Marco notes, “This bill will mark an important step forward in saving taxpayer dollars. Not only should we cut spending but we should rescind money that remains unspent by federal agencies. The American people can no longer afford a government that spends money needlessly.”

This week, Marco received support for his calls to take our debt seriously. The Daytona News-Journal’s editorial board wrote “Rubio’s right: Confront the national debt now”—a piece that laments the lack of leadership on this issue in Washington and praises Marco for taking a strong stand on the national debt. The column concludes: “Congress ran up a $14 trillion debt by kicking the can down the road, year after year. Marco Rubio says no more of that. He’s just a freshman senator, but he’s ready to do something about the leadership failure President Obama lamented five years ago.”

GOP Unveils 2012 Budget Proposal

The Gameplan from Coach

The other day I turned on Glenn Beck to find him talking to Coach. Well, the man who played Coach, Craig T Nelson. They had been discussing the state of the economy, the tea parties and the gameplan for the GOP.

The government has put us dug a very deep hole with the bailouts, the high taxes- set to go even higher, takeover of private companies, and the excessive government waste.

It was then that Coach laid out the gameplan. He announced on Glenn Beck, that he would rather go to jail than pay his taxes to an irresponsible and wasteful government.

I wished we all had that courage. Yet, despite our kicking and screaming we don’t refuse to pay for it. We still write our check out every April 15 without fail.

While it is true that the tea parties attracted some attention, it is not enough to speak our mind to a government that listen. It is time for action. It is time for civil disobedience.

The Tea Parties were named after the Boston Tea Party, (perhaps a misnomer), because the Boston Tea Party was not a peaceful protest, it was an act of civil disobedience. The settlers were refusing to pay their taxes to someone who did not represent their interests. Instead, they choose to destroy their tea rather than concede the authority of a legislature in which they were not directly represented.

We could certainly say the same. The Government of Corporate Bailouts, and Hostile Takeovers is not my government. The Government of Greed and Excess is not my Government. They do not represent our interests or the interests of our children and grandchildren, who will undoubtedly be slaves to a government that has dumped this pile of debt at their door.

In November, Our Country voted for change, but it is up to us to bring about real revolution. Change does begin with the government. It begins with the courage of a single individual who is willing to say NO MORE!

NO MORE GOVERNMENT WASTE!
NO MORE BAILOUTS OF FAILED COMPANIES!
NO MORE HOSTILE TAKEOVERS!
NO MORE GOVERNMENT GREED AND EXCESS!

IF everyone would join in this act of civil disobedience, the government would not be able to stop us. It would be a political disaster if they tried. And that would be the beginning of a new revolution.

Gotta Have Faith

Looks like things aren’t going well for Romney. Yesterday McCain’s mother got the ball rolling again, addressing the issue of Romney’s faith. Today, New Hampshire voters wouldn’t leave it alone. Voters want to know how this would play into his decision making process. It’s a valid question.

Which brings me back to what I said the other day. He’s got a hill to climb, especially in the Bible Belt. I wasn’t far off. In September according to a Pew Research Center poll in September, a quarter of all Republicans – including 36 percent of white evangelical Protestants – said they would be less likely to vote for a Mormon.

Which brings us back to the question…Who do conservatives vote for? They’re not voting for Romney. Guiliani has too many issues with the biggest being pro-choice. And McCain stills leaves a bad taste in many Republican mouths.

Looks like were back to Mike Huckabee or Duncan Hunter. I know the so-called front runners have ruled Huckabee out, but it looks like he’s picking up steam in Iowa. Only time and votes will tell.

Aw.. Mom

Just when you thought you were too old to be embarassed by your mom, John Mccain’s mom lashed out at Romney on MSNBC saying “As far as the Salt Lake City thing, he’s a Mormon and the Mormons of Salt Lake City had caused that scandal. And to clean that up, again, it’s not a subject,” Roberta McCain said.

McCain on clean up detail quickly implied that they did not share the same views.

Principles Not Politics

Frankly, I’m tired of people telling me, “Vote for me, I’m the only one who can beat Hillary.” That’s a bunch of crap. Conservatives are not about compromising on principle. And that’s just what several of the front runners are asking us to do. Frankly, the candidates that are preaching this message are scared, because they are the most liberal candidates. Let’s not take the Republican party down the center or even left because we feel that’s the only way we can win.

That backfired on us in 2006 and will backfire on us again. The fact is that Americans like clear choices. The best thing we can do to beat Hillary is to run someone against her that stands for true conservative values. Someone that is pro-life. Someone diametrically different. Someone like Huckabee or Duncan Hunter. Not someone like Guiliani or Romney. Think about it.

If you’re just going to vote for someone on the criteria alone, that can beat Hillary, why not vote for Ron Paul? I’m sure he could sway a lot of votes from the Democrats, especially anti-war dems.

Who thought they would see the day that Pat Robertson, a Christian opposed to abortion, would back Guiliani just because he says he can beat Hillary?

What does this say about our country? The Christian Right, Moral Majority, or whatever you would like to call them, should be backing someone that fits their beliefs and prinicples, not someone totally the opposite.

Romney and Guiliani both think they’ve got this one in the bag on name recognition alone. But I believe when it comes down to it, the Bible Belt will vote for the one that they have the most in common with. And for me that is Huckabee.

New Year…New Challenges

As we begin the new year we reliquish control of the House and Senate to the Democrats for the first time in 12 years. The path laid out before us is not easy.. but it is one that we must walk if we wish to regain control.

As a party we must return to our conservative roots. Running to the center in the previous election did not help our chances. In fact, it was the so-called “blue dog” democarats that ultimately won because they chose to run on a conservative principles like fiscal responsibility. Not to mention the fact that Republicans were fed up with their own party’s spending and allegations of corruption. As a result we decided to clean house.

Now we have an opportunity to show people who we really are by sticking to our conservative principles and by running true conservatives, not fiscally conservative moderates or democrats.

There is no doubt that the Presidential campaign will begin and end in Florida, especially with our own Mel Martinez as RNC Chair and Seminole County’s Jim Greer as RPOF Chair.

As young Florida Republicans we have a unique opportunity to not only vote for but also to have the ear of the next President of the United States.

There is no doubt that this year 2007 will bring new challenges. The question is are you ready?

Good, Bad, & Ugly

The Election is over and that in itself is reason to celebrate. This has been a long, hard week for all of us and I for one and glad it is over. Some races turned like we wanted, others not so much. But we got through. Here is my take on the election: the good, the bad and the ugly. (Limbaugh’s take on the election)

First, the Bad. Katherine Harris and Tom Lee lost their races. Katherine was not only beat- but embarrassed. Blame this one on the party. The Florida GOP didn’t get on board soon enough to make a difference in this race and this is disappointing.

I was shocked to see that Tom Lee lost this one or should I say that Alex Sink won. We can’t blame this one on our Get Out The Vote Efforts, because we walked, called and put up signs. No, this one was lost only because of Sink’s slick advertising. She was able to convince voters that she was right for the job. And there is nothing we can do to change that.

Second, the Ugly. Well, what can I say except, I wish it would have turned out different. We lost control of the House and we came close to losing the Senate as well. And it is no one’s fault but our own for failing to get our message out and get Republican voters to the polls.

The Democrats and Nancy Pelosi have a vision of the future that is different than ours. Right now all we can do is Imagine a world with no liberals- regroup and plan our strategy for 08. We need to remember, even though the election is over, there is still much work to be done.

Finally, the Good. We as SCYR’s should be proud of our efforts. While we didn’t have a good night nationally, we had a great night locally! Out of all the races that we worked on ( John Mica, Tom Feeney, Sandy Adams, Lee Constantine, Mike Ertel, Joanne Lucarelli, Chris Dorworth, Jeff Bauer, and Timothy Brodeur) we only had one come up short. Our efforts paid out. And that is something we can all be proud of.

Overheard

I was in the lunch room the other day at school when I heard a student explaining his political views. First, he stated I am not a Republican or a Democrat. Immediately, I thought to myself- “Please don’t say you’re a moderate.” The next thing that came out of his mouth was shocking. He said, “I am a captialist.” He went on to explain how he was a strict captailist. Stating, “I am a captialist, but I am not conversative. I am a captialist, but not liberal.” He further explained his views on business and the economy- and how he felt that he was a man without a party. I was sad. Sad to hear that he didn’t think conseratives were pro-captialists.

But it is understandable when you see what has been going on in the Senate this week with “Big Oil”. Liberals made a push for the Windfall Profits Tax again- and many conservatives are ready to latch onto it. This is a dangerous idea. it almost reminds me of Marxism- punishing companies for doing well. Especially when there are many pro-capital solutions to the problem.

First of all, we haven’t had a new refinery in this country in over 35 years. And some of the ones that we do have are now shut down. A pro-capitalist would push for new refinining capabilities to increase oil production.

Second, a pro-capitalist would be for drilling in ANWAR and exploring other places for new sources of oil. Yet, liberals have stopped this exploration at every turn saying it causes environmental damage.

Third, a pro-capitalist would ease restrictions on special enviromentally friendly blends and lower taxes. Lower taxes? you ask. I heard this bit of trivia the other day. The gas companies make about 9¢ profit on each gallon of gasoline, while the government makes 50¢-65¢ on each gallon. Of course that is just the feds. That doesn’t include state, local and sales tax.

Now that is outrageous. Isn’t it about time that we do something about the windfall profits of the government?

Let’s take back our party and those people who consider themselves pro-capitalists.
