Rubio: It’s Time To Hold Obama Accountable

Rubio: “The last thing job creators in America need is more uncertainty from a powerful government agency like the CFPB that will receive a blank check for a half billion dollar budget with virtually no input from Congress.

“President Obama has urged the American people to ‘help hold [him] accountable.’ I stand with my Republican colleagues in an effort to do just that. The truth is we need transparency in government that provides greater confidence that regulations are designed to protect consumers from unfair practices, without destroying jobs. Until basic transparency requests are made, I will not support allowing the CFPB to operate with unaccountable leadership.”

Marco Rubio’s Maiden Floor Speech

Marco Rubio – Newsletter: April 8, 2011

Marco has been working hard all week on behalf of Floridians as the budget negotiations have continued. Even with control of the House, Senate and White House last year, Democrats still failed to pass a budget for this year. As a result, we find ourselves with no long-term budget more than halfway through Fiscal Year 2011. Making matters worse, this lack of leadership has us on a path toward a government shutdown. While Americans know that we must cut spending and begin to tackle our massive debt, many leaders in Washington have still not gotten the message. Marco will continue to make this his top priority to ensure that America’s next 100 years are better than her last 100 years.

A Stronger America…

With a belief that the world is a better place when America is leading, Marco continued to press Washington to take strong positions on Israel and Libya. This week, Marco led his fellow freshmen Republican Senators in sending a letter to Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell asking that America keep its commitments to its staunchest Middle East ally, Israel:

“As freshmen Senators, we campaigned on the need to restore fiscal responsibility to our government. The current path is fiscally unsustainable and will have negative consequences for economic growth and prosperity. As we work to reduce wasteful government spending, we recognize that providing for the national defense is a constitutional responsibility of the federal government. Therefore, we must continue to prioritize the safety of our nation and the security of our allies, including Israel.”

Marco also released a statement this week in support of the Colombia Free Trade Agreement. While the announcement of this agreement is welcome news, Marco notes that it is long overdue. The agreement is particularly good news for Florida with Marco stating that it “will be a boon to our economy, create jobs for Floridians, and help solidify our alliances with these steadfast partners. The agreements with Colombia and Panama in particular will boost Florida businesses, workers and farmers whose livelihoods rely on exports to these countries.”

Fighting For Florida…

This week, Marco voted to repeal one of the most burdensome regulations in the President’s health care law, known as the 1099 provision. This provision would have placed a new burden on businesses to comply with tax filing paperwork by forcing all businesses, charities, and state and local governments to file 1099 forms if they purchase $600 or more in goods and services from another business throughout the year. While repealing 1099 was critical, Marco believes we must repeal and replace the entire health care reform law and he is an original co-sponsor of legislation to do just that.

And in a separate effort to help Florida businesses, Marco voted to prevent the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) from implementing cap-and-trade regulations that would amount to a national energy tax. While this effort wasn’t successful in the Senate, Marco will continue to ensure that unelected bureaucrats in Washington aren’t able to implement regulations that will hurt job creation and raise energy prices for Floridians. Check out what Marco had to say about this week’s vote:

“The policies coming out of Washington are taking our country in the wrong direction, and the last thing Florida families and businesses need is unaccountable bureaucrats imposing an energy tax through regulation that will increase electricity and gasoline prices. … Cap-and-trade would not pass through Congress today and Obama administration should not be able to put one in place through rules drafted behind closed doors without the consent of the American people.”

Committed to Cutting Spending

As Congressional leaders work to hammer out a budget for 2011 and 2012, Marco and Rep. Tom Price (R-GA) introduced a bill to cut $45 billion in unused taxpayer dollars sitting in federal coffers. As Marco notes, “This bill will mark an important step forward in saving taxpayer dollars. Not only should we cut spending but we should rescind money that remains unspent by federal agencies. The American people can no longer afford a government that spends money needlessly.”

This week, Marco received support for his calls to take our debt seriously. The Daytona News-Journal’s editorial board wrote “Rubio’s right: Confront the national debt now”—a piece that laments the lack of leadership on this issue in Washington and praises Marco for taking a strong stand on the national debt. The column concludes: “Congress ran up a $14 trillion debt by kicking the can down the road, year after year. Marco Rubio says no more of that. He’s just a freshman senator, but he’s ready to do something about the leadership failure President Obama lamented five years ago.”

Marco Rubio: Week In Review, April 1, 2011

Crist would confirm Kagan

St. Pete Times: Charlie Crist says he would vote to confirm Elena Kagan, but talking to the Miami Herald editorial board the other day struggled to recall specifically why he opposed Sonia Sotomayor.

Crist Weighs Options

In recent days it has come to light that Crist is weighing his options in the race for US Senate. With Rubio’s commanding lead in the polls, and his loss of Republican support, Crist’s dream of being president is slowly slipping away.

Last year, Crist lobbied to get on the McCain ticket, but he was passed over for Sarah Palin. He opted not to run again for Governor. So, if he loses this his political career, and his chances of president die with him. He has a lot at stake in this election.

Speculation is high among reliable sources that Crist will abandon the Republican Party and run as an Independent. Fox 35 Orlando reported last night, that Crist is closer to making a decision on the matter.

Crist’s Right Hand Fan

Crist may be sweating bullets about the latest polls, however, you won’t see him sweat. What’s his secret? West Palm Beach CBS revealed today (4-13-10) that Gov. Charlie Crist travels everywhere with a fan to keep him cool during interviews.

Rubio on Health Care

During an interview on “This Week in S. Florida w/Michael Putney,” Marco discusses health care (Sunday, 3/21/10, Part 2).

Crist Unapologetic

I attended the recent RPOF meeting held January 9 in Orlando mostly out of curiosity since Greer recently stepped down and since I haven’t been to one in about a year.

I have to admit, I was expecting a little excitement and drama concerning the new Chairman. Alas, I have to wait until next month for the special session.

Instead of a slugfest the session turned into a campaign rally for the Governor, who happens to be running for President. Oops, I mean Senate.

During Crist’s remarks, which turned into a stump speech of how he is going to be the next Senator from Florida he made some rather curious remarks, which went like this…

“I advocated for the stimulus, I thought it was important and I don’t apologize for taking it.”

A pretty bold statement for someone who is losing ground in the polls daily.

He also didn’t apologize for meeting Obama on the campaign trail in South Florida. Instead, he argued about why it was the right thing to do.

On both points, his argument was that he and he alone knows what is best for Florida, despite all the public uproar, and despite the wishes of our elected representatives in the Florida House and Senate.

In so many ways, he sounded like Obama, or a teacher scolding a child.

His speech inspired me. Not because it was particularly inspiring, because it wasn’t. No, it inspired me to go knock on a few doors for his contender and next Senator from Florida, my man, Marco Rubio!

WWCD?

WWCD? What Will Crist Do? Senator Mel Martinez announced today that he will be vacating his senate seat early. This poses a problem for Charlie Crist and possibly Rubio. Crist is in a position to name a successor to the seat that he and Marco Rubio are both running for.

More than likely, he will not name Rubio who is his primary contender in this race.

One possibility is Crist will name himself to the seat and vacate his post as Governor early. He has been campaigning so much lately, it’s not like he is doing his job in Tallahassee anyway. That is besides, the fact, that he has been taking trips to Aspen and the Hamptons to raise money from his rich liberals friends for his Florida Senate seat. And what’s the point of spending money campaigning for a seat that you can take?

Another possibility, is to appoint a political hack, someone that won’t run against him and Rubio in the election, someone like Jim Greer, to the seat to keep it warm for him.

The ball is in Charlie’s court now. Let’s just see if he plays nice.
