Huntsman Drops Out Before SC

Today, Jon Huntsman officially dropped out of the race for President, just one week before the South Carolina primary, scheduled for January 21, 2012.

Huntsman’s campaign never gained traction, even in his home state of New Hampshire where is placed a disappointing third, despite all the time and money he spent there.

Despite his recent attacks on Mitt Romney, his campaign announced that he would be endorsing Romney for President.

Leaving the field with five candidates standing- Romney, Santorum, Paul, Perry, and Gingrich. Perry who finished near last in New Hampshire is hoping for a vault from the voters of South Carolina so that he can continue his campaign.

Romney and Paul take NH

Romney and Ron Paul were the clear winners in the New Hampshire primary on Tuesday night. Romney was first with 39% of the vote, Paul second with 23% of the vote. They both capitalized on the independent vote, with New Hampshire’s open primary laws.

Huntsman who campaigned hard, spending lots of time and money in NH came in third with 17% of the vote. Gingrich and Santorum tied for fourth place receiving 9% of the vote.

Perry, bringing up the rear, received less than 1% of the vote. He is looking forward to South Carolina, where he hopes to do well with Southern voters.

South Carolina primary will be held on January 21.

GOP Race Shapes Up in Iowa

The Winners: Romney and Santorum practically tie in last night’s caucus result. Only 8 votes separated the two. The night was a bit disappointing for the Romney campaign who thought they had this all sewed up. But Santorum showed that he is a serious candidate and he has what it takes to win. Santorum capitalized on the values voters.

But don’t rule out Ron Paul who was able to get 25% of the vote. His campaign is highly organized and he has converted a lot of conservatives who are fed up with the status quo in Washington. As long as the media keeps ignoring him as a serious candidate Paul gathers more support.

The Losers: Gingrich, who came in a distant fourth blamed Romney and others for the negative ad attacks in the last few days. He is on to New Hampshire and he is out for blood, vowing to get back at Romney.

Perry, Bachmann and Hunstman are the big losers of the night who remained in single digits. Huntsman just pulling 1% of the vote. Perry is reassessing his campaign but says he will stay in till South Carolina- where he thinks he can connect with southern voters. Bachmann dropped out of the race but urged her supporters to keep the eye on the prize – occupying the White House in 2012.

New Hampshire votes January 10.

Crist’s Right Hand Fan

Crist may be sweating bullets about the latest polls, however, you won’t see him sweat. What’s his secret? West Palm Beach CBS revealed today (4-13-10) that Gov. Charlie Crist travels everywhere with a fan to keep him cool during interviews.

Gotta Have Faith

Looks like things aren’t going well for Romney. Yesterday McCain’s mother got the ball rolling again, addressing the issue of Romney’s faith. Today, New Hampshire voters wouldn’t leave it alone. Voters want to know how this would play into his decision making process. It’s a valid question.

Which brings me back to what I said the other day. He’s got a hill to climb, especially in the Bible Belt. I wasn’t far off. In September according to a Pew Research Center poll in September, a quarter of all Republicans – including 36 percent of white evangelical Protestants – said they would be less likely to vote for a Mormon.

Which brings us back to the question…Who do conservatives vote for? They’re not voting for Romney. Guiliani has too many issues with the biggest being pro-choice. And McCain stills leaves a bad taste in many Republican mouths.

Looks like were back to Mike Huckabee or Duncan Hunter. I know the so-called front runners have ruled Huckabee out, but it looks like he’s picking up steam in Iowa. Only time and votes will tell.

Principles Not Politics

Frankly, I’m tired of people telling me, “Vote for me, I’m the only one who can beat Hillary.” That’s a bunch of crap. Conservatives are not about compromising on principle. And that’s just what several of the front runners are asking us to do. Frankly, the candidates that are preaching this message are scared, because they are the most liberal candidates. Let’s not take the Republican party down the center or even left because we feel that’s the only way we can win.

That backfired on us in 2006 and will backfire on us again. The fact is that Americans like clear choices. The best thing we can do to beat Hillary is to run someone against her that stands for true conservative values. Someone that is pro-life. Someone diametrically different. Someone like Huckabee or Duncan Hunter. Not someone like Guiliani or Romney. Think about it.

If you’re just going to vote for someone on the criteria alone, that can beat Hillary, why not vote for Ron Paul? I’m sure he could sway a lot of votes from the Democrats, especially anti-war dems.

Who thought they would see the day that Pat Robertson, a Christian opposed to abortion, would back Guiliani just because he says he can beat Hillary?

What does this say about our country? The Christian Right, Moral Majority, or whatever you would like to call them, should be backing someone that fits their beliefs and prinicples, not someone totally the opposite.

Romney and Guiliani both think they’ve got this one in the bag on name recognition alone. But I believe when it comes down to it, the Bible Belt will vote for the one that they have the most in common with. And for me that is Huckabee.

FL Moves Primary

Florida lawmakers voted this week to move up the Presidential Primary to Jan 29 despite threats from National Republican and Democratic leaders to strip some of their delegates for the nominating conventions. In addition they have warned that any candidate who campaigns in Florida early than Feb 5 will be ineligible to receive any of the state’s delegates.

see article

So let me get this straight. Our new Presidential Primary is on Jan 29 but candidates can’t campaign here till Feb 5. That leaves a bit of a conundrum. How are we supposed to vote for someone after the election is closed? And why would a candidate campaign here after an election is closed? Seems a little bit stupid.

What happened to state’s rights? Doesn’t Florida ultimately have the right to move our Primary to whenever we so choose? This decision by the national Republican Party surprises me. The Party that has always stood for state’s rights is not willing to take our right to choose our primary election date away from us. That is ludicrous.

Rest assured, this won’t be the end of the discussion.

FL Looks to Move Primary

A few weeks ago, I wrote about how Florida early primary was not going to be early enough since 25 states were talking about holding their primary the first week of February, essentially moving the so-called SuperTuesday. Now it appears that Florida is getting back in the game. Talk in the Florida House this week was of moving the primary to Jan 29 making our election before California.

So we’ll see what happens!

FL’s Primary Too Late?

There was talk here in Florida about changing our Primary Election Date to somewhere around the 1st of March. However, that may be too late. According to a report released in The Hill the other day 23 states are in the frame to hold primary elections on Feb 5. That’s a whole month earlier than Florida.

Those states include: Delaware, Missouri, New Mexico, Oklahoma, California, Illinois, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Texas, Tennessee, Arkansas, Arizona, Alabama, Georgia, North Dakota, Utah, Kansas, Colorado, West Virginia, Nevada, and possibly Pennsylvania and North Carolina.

So what’s Florida to do? Considering that we can’t hold it before the 1st of March if we don’t want to incur penalties set down by the legislature.

So with about half of the states voting early now, maybe the only fair thing to do is have a National Primary Day so that all states have an equal voice.

Just Getting Started…

This has been a busy week in the election cycle but we are just getting started. With the primary only about 2 weeks away, the YRs have been out in force attending Hob Nobs, Dinners and other events where we can interact with the candidates. You just never know where we’ll show up next.

Thursday’s Hob Nob was packed with people. While I didn’t get a chance myself to go around and greet all the candidates, I did manage to shake a few hands and recruit some potential members. It was a good evening. Though we were rushing to get over to the Executive Meeting for the final candidate debate between Blake and McLean. Before the debate even started McLean had already cleaned up at the Straw Poll. I suppose Blake was a little rattled from that. He came off as unprepared and found himslef reacting to McLean’s comments never really getting the upperhand. Although, I was a bit worried when I arrived and saw all the Blake signs and volunteers in the parking lot. It was overwhelming. But apparently, still not good enough.

Friday’s Dinner was great. We had another great showing of YRs. Alex introduced tonight’s speaker Tom Gallagher, current CFO and candidate for Governor. And later got my pix with Tom.
I was honored to meet Representative John Mica at the dinner as well.

A few weeks ago, the YRs named Jim Greer the Public Servant of the Year. Tonight, our president Jason Brodeur presented Jim Greer with a plaque for all the hard work he has done to help get our club up and running this year as well as his continued support. Thanks Jim! You are truly a Great Republican!

Another full week. And we are just getting started…
