Marco Rubio – Newsletter: April 8, 2011

Marco has been working hard all week on behalf of Floridians as the budget negotiations have continued. Even with control of the House, Senate and White House last year, Democrats still failed to pass a budget for this year. As a result, we find ourselves with no long-term budget more than halfway through Fiscal Year 2011. Making matters worse, this lack of leadership has us on a path toward a government shutdown. While Americans know that we must cut spending and begin to tackle our massive debt, many leaders in Washington have still not gotten the message. Marco will continue to make this his top priority to ensure that America’s next 100 years are better than her last 100 years.

A Stronger America…

With a belief that the world is a better place when America is leading, Marco continued to press Washington to take strong positions on Israel and Libya. This week, Marco led his fellow freshmen Republican Senators in sending a letter to Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell asking that America keep its commitments to its staunchest Middle East ally, Israel:

“As freshmen Senators, we campaigned on the need to restore fiscal responsibility to our government. The current path is fiscally unsustainable and will have negative consequences for economic growth and prosperity. As we work to reduce wasteful government spending, we recognize that providing for the national defense is a constitutional responsibility of the federal government. Therefore, we must continue to prioritize the safety of our nation and the security of our allies, including Israel.”

Marco also released a statement this week in support of the Colombia Free Trade Agreement. While the announcement of this agreement is welcome news, Marco notes that it is long overdue. The agreement is particularly good news for Florida with Marco stating that it “will be a boon to our economy, create jobs for Floridians, and help solidify our alliances with these steadfast partners. The agreements with Colombia and Panama in particular will boost Florida businesses, workers and farmers whose livelihoods rely on exports to these countries.”

Fighting For Florida…

This week, Marco voted to repeal one of the most burdensome regulations in the President’s health care law, known as the 1099 provision. This provision would have placed a new burden on businesses to comply with tax filing paperwork by forcing all businesses, charities, and state and local governments to file 1099 forms if they purchase $600 or more in goods and services from another business throughout the year. While repealing 1099 was critical, Marco believes we must repeal and replace the entire health care reform law and he is an original co-sponsor of legislation to do just that.

And in a separate effort to help Florida businesses, Marco voted to prevent the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) from implementing cap-and-trade regulations that would amount to a national energy tax. While this effort wasn’t successful in the Senate, Marco will continue to ensure that unelected bureaucrats in Washington aren’t able to implement regulations that will hurt job creation and raise energy prices for Floridians. Check out what Marco had to say about this week’s vote:

“The policies coming out of Washington are taking our country in the wrong direction, and the last thing Florida families and businesses need is unaccountable bureaucrats imposing an energy tax through regulation that will increase electricity and gasoline prices. … Cap-and-trade would not pass through Congress today and Obama administration should not be able to put one in place through rules drafted behind closed doors without the consent of the American people.”

Committed to Cutting Spending

As Congressional leaders work to hammer out a budget for 2011 and 2012, Marco and Rep. Tom Price (R-GA) introduced a bill to cut $45 billion in unused taxpayer dollars sitting in federal coffers. As Marco notes, “This bill will mark an important step forward in saving taxpayer dollars. Not only should we cut spending but we should rescind money that remains unspent by federal agencies. The American people can no longer afford a government that spends money needlessly.”

This week, Marco received support for his calls to take our debt seriously. The Daytona News-Journal’s editorial board wrote “Rubio’s right: Confront the national debt now”—a piece that laments the lack of leadership on this issue in Washington and praises Marco for taking a strong stand on the national debt. The column concludes: “Congress ran up a $14 trillion debt by kicking the can down the road, year after year. Marco Rubio says no more of that. He’s just a freshman senator, but he’s ready to do something about the leadership failure President Obama lamented five years ago.”

Last Sunday, Marco spoke to Chris Wallace about the budget debate, the debt ceiling and the unfolding situation in Libya. Watch the video here.

Unto Death Do Us Part

Former RPOF Chairman, Jim Greer’s political career may be over, but his loyalty to Crist runs deep. He supported him for Governor, and he supports him in his campaign for US Senate.

It is strange considering, he is losing support from the party at an alarming rate. Greer’s support is eerily similar to that of a spouse. If I didn’t know better, I would have thought they were married. Here is what he said:

“Charlie Crist has always put the people first before partisan politics and that has always upset those who put partisan politics before the people. If putting the people first once again requires him to run as an independent he should do it!’”

But Greer has his own problems. He and his personal assistant, Delmar Johnson are currently under investigation for misappropriation of party funds. The matter is being investigated by Attorney General Bill McCollum.

Politics sure does make strange bedfellows. Just don’t tell Crist’s wife.

Crist Weighs Options

In recent days it has come to light that Crist is weighing his options in the race for US Senate. With Rubio’s commanding lead in the polls, and his loss of Republican support, Crist’s dream of being president is slowly slipping away.

Last year, Crist lobbied to get on the McCain ticket, but he was passed over for Sarah Palin. He opted not to run again for Governor. So, if he loses this his political career, and his chances of president die with him. He has a lot at stake in this election.

Speculation is high among reliable sources that Crist will abandon the Republican Party and run as an Independent. Fox 35 Orlando reported last night, that Crist is closer to making a decision on the matter.

WWCD?

WWCD? What Will Crist Do? Senator Mel Martinez announced today that he will be vacating his senate seat early. This poses a problem for Charlie Crist and possibly Rubio. Crist is in a position to name a successor to the seat that he and Marco Rubio are both running for.

More than likely, he will not name Rubio who is his primary contender in this race.

One possibility is Crist will name himself to the seat and vacate his post as Governor early. He has been campaigning so much lately, it’s not like he is doing his job in Tallahassee anyway. That is besides, the fact, that he has been taking trips to Aspen and the Hamptons to raise money from his rich liberals friends for his Florida Senate seat. And what’s the point of spending money campaigning for a seat that you can take?

Another possibility, is to appoint a political hack, someone that won’t run against him and Rubio in the election, someone like Jim Greer, to the seat to keep it warm for him.

The ball is in Charlie’s court now. Let’s just see if he plays nice.

Tweetle Dum Tweetle Dee

The explosion of twitter has everyone tweeting these days about something. celebrities, news anchors, congressmen, senators, and even the white house seem to have something to tweet about.

But on twitter, you are not judged by the quality of your tweets but the number of followers that you have. A new website called We Follow tracks the number of followers for everyone who has submitted their tweet feed.

As I was poking around on there I came across some startling revelations that may reveal some insight into today’s culture. We follow ranks the top ten twitterers- regardless of category.

Our president Barack Obama, who thinks that he is the most important man in the world, has 1,623,513 followers and is ranked 6. But Oprah, CNN, Brittney Spears, Ellen DeGeneres are all ranked higher than him. In fact, Ellen has almost twice as many followers with 2,323,281. But she was slightly edged out by Ashton Kutcher at 2,610,810 who is ranked number 1. So I guess Ashton Kutcher punked all of you!

In the news category, George Stephanopoulos is ranked eight with 883,663 followers while David Gregory is ranked 12 with 761,379. Anderson Cooper ranked 24 with 272,951. And Katie Couric again brings up the rear at 49 with 37,614 followers.

The latest Nielsen ratings had David Gregory (NBC) in the lead followed by Charlie Gibson (ABC) and Katie Couric (CBS) bringing up the rear again. That is fairly consistent with their twitter rank. Charlie Gibson was not ranked. Maybe George Stephanopoulos should be anchoring the nightly news. Hmm…something for ABC to think about. Somehow, Katie Couric has more TV viewers than twitter followers. Must be a fluke!

Rush, Hannity, Glenn Beck are not listed and have no ranking.

In the politics category, Al Gore is ranked 2, with 1,156,450 followers slightly behind Obama with 1,156,450. Makes you wonder exactly, how Obama won the last election, since Al Gore has the personality of a tree! John McCain is ranked 5 with 931,603- behind NPR and Time Magazine. But he has more followers than all the nightly news anchors. Martha Stewart was slightly more popular than McCain with 969,514 followers. Mitt Romney is ranked 59 with 12,255 followers- Katie Couric has twice as many followers as him. Hmmm…

Under the blogger category Perez Hilton is ranked 2 with 1,146,482 slightly behind P Diddy Sean Combs who is ranked 1 with 1,388,423.

So what does all this mean? Well, Obama won the presidency with a strong grassroots campaign on the internet- using a variety of social media that was largely ignored by the Republicans. While our party is trying to delve into the arena now- we still have a long way to catch up to get our message out.

The numbers also reveal that politics is not high on twitter users minds. This may just be a reflection of the attitude of voter apathy- or the frustration of voters to effect change. It might also be a result of the sluggish economy- people tuning out politicians and tuning into entertainers like Ellen and Oprah.

But the fact remains that twittering the future. More people are tapping into mobile news with their phones and ipods- especially in our on demand society. The more ways that they can keep in touch with their constituents the better.- The first rule in politics is to go where the votes are- and the sooner that politicians adapt to the new media the more likely they are to appeal to younger voters.

The US has 535 legislators (US House and Senate). As of now, 170 on twitter. Florida is allotted 27 legislators. Out of those 27 only 7 are on twitter. Of those, 5 are Republican. They include:

Let’s encourage more of our representatives at the state and federal levels to use twitter and other online social marketing sites to keep in touch with their constituents. Tweet the Vote!

Why the GOP needs Marco

This year the battle for the 2010 US Florida Senate Race is not only about rebuilding our party, it is finding someone who will lead us into a new era.

2009 is the time for rebuilding, a time to draw a line in the sand and separate the elephants from the RINOs.

For too long we have let Liberals define us, and ignored Conservatives. I say no more! No more should we be silent and watch on the sidelines as our team loses! No more should we consult the other team and let them pick our players! What we need to do is stand up, look our enemy in the eye and fight!

We need a smart, young charismatic individual who is not afraid to stand up for what he knows is right. We need a likable conservative guy that can relate to the younger generation of our party. We need a guy who is on his way up not out. We need a straight talking, Reagan walking Republican. We need someone who believes in our core principles of limited government and fiscal responsibility.

We need someone with a 100 ideas, who has the means to get them done. We need a listener. We need someone who doesn’t compromise on principles. We need a leader.

We need Marco Rubio.
